The NFL has grown into a truly global phenomenon, with millions of fans tuning in from every corner of the world. While American football is most popular in the United States, countries like Mexico, Canada, Germany, the UK, Brazil, and Australia boast millions of dedicated followers.
According to Sportskeeda and the Global Web Index, the NFL has a significant international fanbase outside the United States. Mexico leads the way with over 23 million fans, followed closely by Brazil with approximately 20 million. Canada and South Korea each have over 7 million NFL followers, while Germany boasts more than 6.5 million. The United Kingdom has around 6 million dedicated fans, with Spain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Argentina also showing strong support.
Interestingly, things look a little different when it comes to historic search trends, according to ESPN. Google Trends data tracks search interest, meaning how often people in a country look up the NFL online. This data captures curiosity and occasional interest, even from people who might not be dedicated fans, but are curious about big events, like Super Bowl LIX.
Since 2004, when Google Trends data tracking began, several countries have consistently shown high interest in the NFL through online searches. As you'd expect, Canada and Mexico lead the way. But countries with smaller populations start to show up, too. For example, Dominican Republic (population: 11 million) ranks among the top searchers, highlighting the league’s reach into the Caribbean. In Europe, Ireland (population: 5 million) stands out as a key market for NFL-related searches. And while Australia remains a major hub for American football fans in the Southern Hemisphere, New Zealand (population: 5 million) comes in just behind its larger neighbour where it comes to NFL-related search volume.
