1. Kunstmuseum Basel

Home to one of the most impressive and oldest art collections in Europe, the Kunstmuseum spans from the Old Masters to contemporary works.

It’s considered the most important art museum in all of Switzerland, so it should be at the top of your list. 

Tip: Visit on Tuesdays after 5 pm for free entry, and take your time exploring the modern extension for cutting-edge temporary exhibitions. 

Extra: The museum's collection includes works by heavyweights like Picasso, Van Gogh, and Monet.

2. Basel Minster (Münster)

This Gothic cathedral, with its twin towers and red sandstone façade, is an architectural masterpiece, and certain sections even tow the line of Romanesque design.

Besides its architecture, it has an interesting history too, as it was originally a Roman Catholic cathedral but today is a Reformed Protestant church.

Tip: Climb the tower at sunset for breathtaking panoramic views over the Rhine and the city skyline. Take your time - it gets tighter the higher you climb!

Extra: The cathedral’s crypt houses the tomb of Bishop Rudolf von Habsburg, a member of the Habsburg dynasty that ruled over much of Europe. Also known for their ‘special’ family policy of inbreeding…

3. Old Town (Altstadt)

Basel’s Old Town is a picture-perfect maze of gorgeous cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and charming boutiques, retaining much of its old-world heritage. Perfect for an aimless wander. 

Tip: Start your journey at Spalenberg and let yourself get lost. Always the best way to stumble upon hidden courtyards and local artisan shops. 

Extra: Look out for the unique medieval door knockers that adorn many of the historic buildings. These intricate metalworks often indicated the status and wealth of the household. 

4. Tinguely Fountain

Designed by Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, this playful, kinetic fountain brings movement and whimsy to the city center, with each sculpture spurting water in a unique way.

Combined with the music from the buskers who play nearby, it’s a perfect spot to chill and take a breather.

Tip: Visit at night when the sculptures are beautifully illuminated, adding to the fountain’s eclectic and magical appeal. 

Extra: The fountain is made from repurposed parts of an old theater stage. The movement of the sculptures is meant to symbolise them ‘talking’ to each other, just as did the mimers, actors and dancers who once performed at this very spot. Impress your travel partner with this amazing factoid! 

5. Rhein River

On warm days, you’ll see locals floating down the Rhine using special waterproof bags called Wickelfisch.

It’s both a transport method and a beloved summer ritual. And this is Switzerland, so even floating on a rubber ring is done in a classy way. 

Tip: Beat the heat, grab a Wickelfisch and join in. It’s the best way to experience Basel like a local. 

Extra: There are designated entry and exit points along the river to make your floating experience seamless, and a few companies renting everything you need along the river bank. 

6. Museum der Kulturen Courtyard

While the museum itself is worth a visit, its hidden courtyard is a true oasis in the middle of the city. 

Tip: Grab a coffee from the nearby Museum bistro Rollerhof (it’s excellent here, but expect museum prices) and enjoy a quiet moment in this serene setting. 

Extra: For all you budding anthropologists, the museum showcases fascinating ethnographic exhibits from around the world.

These lesser-known spots offer a different perspective of this lesser-visited city.

7. Hafenkran Bar

This imposing, one-of-a-kind bar is set inside a converted industrial crane, offering stunning riverside views.

If you like your afternoon drinks with a side of the dystopian. 

Tip: Visit at golden hour for the perfect sunset drink with a local beer in hand. Or if you’re not in the mood for something alcoholic, Hafenkran also serves up refreshing and delicious organic & Fairtrade tea & iced tea.

Extra: The crane was once used for loading cargo along the Rhine before its transformation. In the later evening it can tend to get pretty rowdy, and the setting is incredibly cool, if that sounds up your alley. 

8. Paper Mill Museum (Papiermühle)

A hands-on museum dedicated to the art of papermaking, printing, and bookbinding.

It’s been making paper for over 500 years, and the original building facade remains and is gorgeous to look at from the outside, even if you decide not to pay in.

Tip: It’s a great rainy-day activity and fun for kids and adults alike.

9. HeK (House of Electronic Arts)

A contemporary art space showcasing digital and media art, HeK is at the forefront of Basel’s modern creative scene.

If there’s one sight that showcases Basel’s perfect blend of tradition and modernity, this is the one. 

Tip: Check their events calendar for live AV shows, workshops, or interactive exhibits. 

Extra: The exhibitions often include immersive virtual reality experiences. Woah, man. 

10. Augusta Raurica

For all you day trippers, just a short free shuttle bus from Basel, is Augusta Raurica: one of the best-preserved Roman archaeological sites in Switzerland.

Later in the summer there’s even a Roman festival in this idyllic setting. 

Tip: Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch among the ruins while soaking in history, and imagining the gladiator combat and chariot races that once took place in this very spot.

Extra: The site includes an impressive and remarkably well-preserved amphitheater that once held up to 10,000 spectators.

Eurovision 2025 in Basel - FAQ

When is Eurovision 2025 taking place?
The Grand Final is set for Saturday, May 17, 2025, with the two semi-finals on May 13 and May 15.

Where exactly is it happening in Basel?
The main event will be held at St. Jakobshalle, a large indoor arena just outside the city centre.

How do I get tickets?
Tickets are sold in waves on the official Eurovision website and often sell out fast. The registration window for Eurovision 2025 tickets ran from 16 December 2024 to 10 January 2025, and only those who registered, confirmed their registration, and were authenticated by Ticketcorner are eligible to buy tickets. What about rehearsal tickets?
You can attend Eurovision rehearsals, and tickets are usually easier (and cheaper) to get than for the live shows. These are great options if you want the Eurovision experience without battling for Grand Final seats. Tickets are sold in waves via the official site, and pre-registration is often required.
